Question for the expert:

With the pitcher on the mound, full windup, runner on 3rd, no outs. Pitcher removes his hand from the glove, and replaces it into the glove more than once, Is that a balk?

Peter van der Merwe, South Africa

The expert:

It is a balk though you have to be careful. Both major professional interpretation manuals (PBUC and MLBUM) provide that the pitcher while on the rubber may reach into his glove to momentarily adjust the ball. That is not a balk. The Jim Evans balk video also makes that point. But once is ok, but twice is too many.

Letter to the Editor:

To Whom It May Concern: After the infamous Eddings affair, the esteemed Editor-in-Chief of this publication teased us with promises that Tee and HHH were going to expound on this "conundrum." I've read Tee's input, but have yet to see the article from HHH. Is it still on track or has it been scrapped?

Doug Robertson, Fitchburg, MA

Peter Osborner's article on the "Eddings affair" appeared on 14 October. Click here to see what he said - if you're a subscriber.
