Us or Them — Revisited
December 11th, 2003

For a couple of years we've been pointing out that Officiating.com can do some things much better than Referee magazine. That's not to say we think they have a bad product: They don't. We have a complete collection of the magazine, going all the way back to 1976.

But our news is up-to-the-second, you can reach previous articles with a click of the mouse, you can search for authors, subject, or phrases, our authors are all working officials, etc. Electronic media, we believe, are where the future of publication lies.

Click the title to find out what Referee has to say about our Editor-in-Chief.

Us or Them?

We're always ready to demonstrate why Officiating.com is the best source of information about officiating. Check inside to find out some additonal reasons why we're number one.
The Ejection Wasn't Racist
August 9th, 2003

On August 4 we linked to a story about an umpire who ejected a black girl because she wouldn't remove beads from her braided hair. Her mother said the ejection occurred because the white umpire is a racist.

That was too much for Mark DeNucci, who fired off a Letter to the Editor. We asked permission to print it here. His reply: "Please do publish my letter because I doubt that it will get published in The Daily Commercial."

Mark, a great many more people will read it here than in the Daily Commercial.

QuesTec Umpire Evaluation System
A reader's view
May 31st, 2003

Here's comment from a reader who answered our challenge: Tell us what you think about QuesTec:

My name is John Sandlin, baseball umpire from Michigan. My opinion of the QuesTec System is: It is a good system for evaluation, but it is in need of a whole lot of work to make the system work the way it needs to work.

Did you watch "Outside The Lines" last night [Thursday, May 29] on ESPN with Bob Ley? They had Jim Evans and Buck Martinez on there as guests. I agree with having a system in place to grade umpires on their strike zones, but some of the pitches QuesTec deems to be strikes — well, none of us would be caught calling strikes, not if we wanted to keep our jobs as umpires.

We're happy to print John's opinion. But we're also looking for article-length comment. Send your piece to carlchildress@rightsports.com
